Roundtable Cultural Seminar: The Deep State
In the Trump era, fulminations against the “deep state” have spread from marginalized extremes on both the left and the right to the center of American political discourse. To provide a dose of reality to the discussions, this Seminar will focus on the “deep state”—the federal law enforcement and intelligence community. Unusually for a democracy, the United States had no national police force, so its path on this issue has departed from comparable governments in Europe, as well as Israel and Australia.
The last 10-15 minutes of each session will discuss contemporary events.
Session 1: The Federal Government and Law Enforcement
Session 2: The Cold War and Expanding the Federal Government
Session 3: Scandal and Oversight
Session 4: 9/11 and Restructuring
Session 5: The “Deep State” and Popular Culture
Session 6: The Modern Era
