I am from Higgins Beach, in Scarborough, Maine, six miles south of Portland. After spending five years as track announcer at Scarborough Downs, I left to study fulltime in graduate school, where my advisor was Akira Iriye. My B.A. (1988) and Ph.D. (1993) come from Harvard, my M.A. from the University of Chicago (1989). Before coming to Brooklyn, I taught at Arizona State and Williams; in recent years, I served as a visiting professor at Harvard (2005) and at Tel Aviv University (2007-8), as Fulbright Distinguished Chair in the Humanities.

Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case (Thomas Dunne, 2008, 2^nd edition; co-authored with Stuart Taylor), which has been optioned by HBO.
